Popular TV series Maria scooped two awards at the 2020 Kalasha Awards with the lead actress, Yasmin Said alias Maria bagging the Best Lead Actress in the TV Drama category.
The awards were held at Sarit Centre, Nairobi on Saturday, December 12, with a number of local productions emerging winners of the gong.
The 20-year-old actress has had a stellar year while casting for Maria that has become popular among Kenyans.

“To all our able fans we want to say thank you, we would not be here if it were not for you guys, thank you for the support and to the crew, thank you for the good work.
“It has not been easy but we thank the Almighty for the far he has brought us, and to the producers thank you so much for giving us the platform,” said Maria after winning the award.
According to 2019 data from Geopoll, the romantic drama TV series that airs on Citizen TV from Monday to Friday at 7:30 to 8 p.m is the most popular show in the country.
Yasmin is the lead protagonist going by the same name Maria, and plays a tomboy from the ghetto who moved to live with this high-end family.
However, she falls in love with one of the sons, Luwi, played by (Brian Ogana), who is married to Sophia, (Bridget Shighadi) in the series.
Out of his love for her, Luwi, a drunkard, contemplates divorcing Sophia to be with Maria. The drama doesn’t end there as Luwi’s brother, Victor, also expresses his love for Maria – he takes on the laid back approach.
Luwi who was also nominated for the ‘Best Lead Actor in TV Drama‘ however failed to win the award, with Leon Ongaya from Pete taking home the gong.
The award-winning series also secured the Best TV Drama during the ceremony that was graced by ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru.
Kenyan film, 40 Sticks, a 95-minute movie centred around a group of death row prisoners who are trapped inside a crashed prison bus bagged nine awards at Kalasha.
