Sonko Heads To Court To Stop New Election

Politician Mike Sonko has filed petitions against the Senate’s decision to uphold his removal as Nairobi Governor.

On Monday, December 21, 2020, Mr Sonko moved to the courts seeking temporary orders stopping the new election slated in 60 days.

Last week , the Senate upheld the decision by the Nairobi County Assembly that saw 88 MCAs out of 122 votes for the impeachment of the governor.

The impeachment motion was presented before the assembly by Minority Leader Michael Ogada with 82 MCAs.

Senate Speaker Ken Lusaka stated the four main charges namely; gross violation of the constitution and other laws, abuse of office, gross misconduct, and crimes under national law.

On the first count of Gross Abuse of the Constitution of Kenya, 27 senators voted in favour of the motion, 16 rejected it, while two senators, Mutula Kilonzo Jr and  Johnson Sakaja abstained.
