Family Protests as Kin Collapses & Dies after Leaving Police Station

  • A family in Kasarani area, Nairobi County, is demanding justice after CCTV footage showed their kin collapsed and died moments after leaving a police station.

The man identified as Genson Mbuba had been arrested and taken to Kasarani Police Station before he was set free.

Speaking to the media, his family members said that Mbuba, who worked as a caretaker, did not suffer from any underlying condition neither was he unwell prior to his arrest.

A postmortem report of the deceased showed that he had suffered head trauma after reportedly being hit by a blunt object.

The family believes that Mbuba succumbed to injuries sustained inside the police station where the 37-year-old man had been detained.

“These results (postmortem) are also shocking to me because the last day I saw him, he did not show any problems and did not tell me about any illness.

“After our interaction, now I find him at the City Mortuary. I am so saddened as his sister because if he had any problem, they (police) could have called me to take him to hospital,” Mbuba’s sister Hannet Murugi told Citizen TV.

The family further demanded action against the officers who handled Mbuba.

“We want to know who is responsible. He just collapsed near the police station. Who took him? It must have been the police. They should tell us where they took him,” another relative demanded.

This comes even as cases of police brutality across the country raises concern with many Kenyans demanding action from the state.

In a separate incident, a police officer who allegedly shot his friend over 10 times outside Nyari Police Post was detained for seven days as investigations into the matter continues.

The officer identified as Edgar Mukamba reportedly fired the shots on Tuesday, December 29, 2020.
