Welcome to What’s On My Phone, a weekly column where we will be
snooping in on people’s smartphones and figure out how they use them, what apps they are using, and why plus tips too.
We’ll include new entries with different and notable people about what’s on their smartphones and if they are a reflection of their personalities or not.
This week, we’re featuring Waithira Kunene, a Techweez contributor with a passion for celebrating and highlighting women in tech – herself being one too.
This Q/A has been edited for length and clarity.
A little intro about yourself
I am a digital native, a book nerd, and a Techweez contributor.
I dream of a world where we all take advantage of this era of the digital revolution to positively impact communities. And empower (mostly) the youth both socially and economically.
What smartphone are you using and why?
Well, I have always been a Huawei person. Currently using Huawei P30 Lite. I fell in love with the phone when it was first released around 2019.
For me it’s was love at first sight. Its striking look-the peacock blue color, its camera versatility, fast charge, excellent battery life. And of course, its memory is very efficient and effective.
Let’s start with your home screen – how and why have you arranged your apps the way they are?
I consider myself very reasonably sophisticated, organized, and very intentional.
I have 2 home screens.
My first homescreen has primarily the social media apps which I frequently use. Gmail because I want to keep tabs on recent emails. WhatsApp because I receive a lot of work updates via the app. Mysafaricom app, Money apps and SC mobile for managing my finances better. The contacts and call apps for easy access.
My second homescreen consists of 3 folders where I arrange apps for simplicity. Google apps folder. The Tools folder. Google docs folder; for docs, slides, sheets e.t.c.
Did I mention books turn me on?
This is why on this very screen you will find the eBoox and the audiobooks. These are my go- to when I forget to carry my current reads around.
Once in a while, when am bored I listen to podcasts. I have the Stitcher app and the Medium app that feeds my hunger for short, juicy, and inspirational stories.
What’s on your lock screen wallpaper/home screen wallpaper?
Oh! I have a great liking for animations and illustrations. I follow several accounts on Instagram that solely post illustrations. And I get to screenshot any beautiful, irresistible illustration and animated images I come across. You can now imagine what my gallery looks like.
Currently, my lock screen has an illustration I got from the Yaoyaomva IG account. And my home screen has Elsa, a character from the animation Movie-Frozen.
How do you handle notifications?
I have turned on my notifications, especially for my social apps. A part of my work entails helping brands or companies better manage their social media sites. It only makes sense for me to have my notifications on.
Aside from that, I have my Google calendar notification on, this is crucial to make sure I never miss a zoom meeting.
What customization tweaks have you done on your phone?
Phew. None, actually.
What is the app you use to have fun and unwind? What other apps apart from social media apps do you spend the most time on?
I am a book nerd, haha, You will catch me mostly going through my eBoox and medium.
Anything else before we wrap up?
My next move would be cheating on Huawei and going for Samsung. Huawei is still my Love.
I love phones, beautiful phones with striking designs and decent screens. And good battery life.
