Nairobi Motorists Sprayed With Sewage in Traffic Jam [VIDEO]

  • Nairobi motorists using Waiyaki Way on Wednesday, March 17, had their vehicles sprayed with sewage following a pipe burst along the  busy road.

The incident occurred around the Sodom area near the Kangemi Bridge where road works are currently ongoing.

The pipe burst strewn the mixture of sewage and sand onto the vehicles on both sides of the road.

This resulting in heavy traffic along the highway with motorists reluctant to drive through the water.

Drivers complained of having zero visibility as they drove through the section with caution and their windows closed to avoid the water from getting into their vehicles.

The section of the road is currently undergoing construction with the demolition of the Kangemi Bridge in progress before its reconstructrion to accommodate a new road design.

In a notice on February 9, 2021, KeNHA warned that those using the route would use a diversion on the Kangemi Bridge which would affect the regular flow of traffic.

“This is to notify you that a diversion has been done on the left-hand side (LHS) of  Kangemi Bridge next to Total Petrol Station for a distance of about 100 metres to serve traffic headed towards the Nakuru side,” the notice read in part.

Traffic headed to Nairobi was diverted to the existing LHS off the main carriageway.

The ongoing expansion of the busy highway is running concurrently with the erection of the Nairobi Expressway which has caused major traffic disruption for motorists using the route.

The highway serves as an access and communications link for around 6 million people (approximately 15% of the total population of Kenya).

This road is scheduled to be widened to a 6-lane highway under a construction contract awarded to China Wu Yi company and financed by the World Bank.
