CS Matiang’i Summon Matiang’i Over Suicide, Murder Among Police

Cases of police officers murdering themselves, their coworkers, and venting their grievances on social media have raised worries about mental health in the armed services.

Interior CS Fred Matiang’i was summoned by MPs to outline realistic methods and targeted actions to address mental healthcare among officers.

Senators want Matiang’i to reveal the situation of mental health in the disciplined forces, as well as the regulations and administrative mechanisms in place for officers.

Mbito, who chairs the Health Committee, wants Matiang’i to name the state institutions and doctors who are responsible for providing mental healthcare to the various units.

In comparison to previous year, he would also indicate the number of officers who have sought treatment from the institutions since January.

In addition, the member asks Matiang’i to clarify whether the government has set up a national database to aid in prioritizing prevention and treatment initiatives for the police who have been affected.

The summons comes in the aftermath of a rise in the number of police officers committing themselves, with others turning on their coworkers and family members and murdering them.
