Rigathi Gachagua engaged in confrontation with the police at a rally

Mathira Member of Parliament Rigathi Gachagua has found himself in trouble yet again with law enforcement officers.

Gachagua was arrested and released from detention three days ago by the police following alleged financial scandal.

The Mathira lawmaker was caught up in a confrontation with the police officers while addressing his supporters at Karatina Market on Thursday, June 30, 2021.

The incidence happened after the police stormed the venue where the legislator was addressing his supporters and lobbed tear gas canisters in an attempt to disperse the crowd.

The police accused the lawmaker and his supporters of disregarding Covid-19 containment measured issued by the Ministry of Health during their meeting.

According to the video that was shared through the social media, Gachagua is seen confronting the police officers who later fired teargas canisters at the crowd.

“Let me talk to my people. You can beat us up if you so feel like,” Gachagua stated.

On Wednesday, July 28, 2021, the Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe cautioned politicians against holding rallies amidst a surge in Covid-19 cases.

The Health CS noted that hospitals had recorded increased admissions with the most reported case being the deadly Indian variant.

This comes after Rigathi had spent the weekend in police custody following his arrest on Friday, July 23, 2021 and was later charged with conspiracy to commit an offence of corruption, fraudulent acquisition of public property, money laundering, acquisition of proceeds of crime and conflict of interest.

He was charged alongside nine other suspects including; William Wahome Mwangi, Anne Nduta Ruo, Julianne Jahenda Makaa, Samuel Murimi, Grace Wambui Kariuki, Lawrence Kimaru, Irene Wambui Ndigiriri, David Reuben and a company M/s Rapid Medical Supplies.

They were ordered by the court to appear before the court on August 3, 2021.
