ICC Throws Out Lawyer Gicheru Plea

The plea for a temporary suspension of proceedings by lawyer Paul Gicheru’s defense team was denied by the ICC trial chamber.

On September 17, the defense requested a temporary delay of proceedings, informing the Chamber that it had filed a request with the Presidency for Judge Samba’s disqualification.

It claims that any further judgements by Judge Samba would jeopardize the defense’s right to a fair trial, thus it has sought the Status Conference, and all proceedings have been halted until the Plenary makes a decision on the pending disqualification request.

Samba (Sierra Leone) was one of the six judges sworn in in March of this year.

From 2010 through 2015, she worked as the Field Operations Officer at the ICC Prosecution’s Uganda branch office.

She focused on the Ugandan situation and supervised and maintained a database of prosecution witnesses, especially in Northern Uganda, during her time in Uganda.
