Getafe: Michel, a homecoming that turns to humiliation

Back in Spain after an adventure in Mexico, the former OM coach was tasked with reviving the club in the suburbs of Madrid. But at the moment, it’s a nightmare.

Getafe supporters are disillusioned. And not just a little. A modest club in the suburbs of Madrid, the team had accustomed its fans to oscillating between eighth and fifth place in the standings between the seasons 2018/2019 and 2019/2020. But since last year and a fifteenth place four points from the red zone, the Azulones are playing with fire. This season, they are even in great danger.

Defeated 2-0 on the Betis lawn, Getafe has achieved the grand slam for the moment in La Liga. With seven consecutive defeats, the Spanish formation is the dunce of its class. Last with zero points on the clock, Getafe is the laughing stock of Europe since only Norwich City has done “as well” in the five major European championships. A terrible statement of failure for a team that has grown stronger this summer with ex-Strasbourg player Stefan Mitrovic, ex-Blaugrana Carles Aleña, Colchonero Vitolo and Benfica midfielder who passed through Monaco, Florentino Luis.

A decent transfer window, but the mayonnaise does not take. Which does not seem to worry the Portuguese rookie. “I think it’s only a matter of time, the results will change. The team works well, we do what the coach asks us. The solution is through work. This situation (the future of the coach, note), it is the direction which manages it. I know Michel and we are with him. “ Because if there is one person to whom all eyes are on, it is the coach, Michel.

An incredible series of defeats

Back in Getafe ten years later (he coached the club from 2009 to 2011), the former glory of Real Madrid still shows that his coaching career is very complicated, especially since his departure from Olympiakos in 2015. Past by the Olympique de Marseille, Malaga and the Mexican UNAM Pumas, Michel is obviously threatened after this terrible negative series. Hired for two years, the former midfielder knows he is not in a strong position. But for him, this situation is unfair compared to the content offered by his men.

“We are losing matches and it’s an extremely confusing situation. We lost by playing well, like most of the time, and by playing poorly. (…) I don’t think about it (his dismissal, editor’s note). I don’t mean to give up, it’s the least important thing. Seven losses in a row is very impressive, even if the team is playing well. (…) I insist, I do not think that we play so badly and that we are so bad, the coach first, to deserve these seven defeats in a row. “ Fortunately for him and his team, the first non-relegation is only four points ahead …
