1 dead After Strong Earthquake Shakes Greece

According to the Athens Geodynamic Institute, a severe earthquake measuring 5.8 jolted the island of Crete in southern Greece on Monday, causing residents to flee their homes and buildings.

According to AFP, which cites public television, one person has died as a result of the earthquake.
Authorities say two people were trapped in damaged buildings.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) had previously said that the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.5, while the United States Geological Survey (USGS) had stated that it had a value of 6.0.

According to the Athens Institute, the epicenter of the tremor occurred 23 kilometers (14 miles) northwest of Arvi at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Two churches and other buildings in Arkalohori village were destroyed, according to the mayor, and two individuals were trapped, one in a church when the dome fell during maintenance work and the other in a home.

According to EMSC, the quake was 2 kilometers (1.24 miles) deep.
