Allies of Deputy President William Ruto have once again mocked his leading rival in their Rift Valley backyard, Baringo Senator Gideon Moi.
The KANU leader has placed himself among the people keen on succeeding President Uhuru Kenyatta next year, a job also being sought by the DP.
And while he says that he is very serious about his bid, allies of the DP now say that he is not after the presidency but is being used to spoil it for Ruto.
They say that this is a man being used, most probably by the Deep State, to divide Ruto’s votes in Rift Valley, with the hope of weakening Ruto ahead of 2022.
Bomet Senator Christopher Lang’at claims that Moi is among the people being used by the ‘Deep State’, but who cannot be considered for a bigger job.
This, he told The Daily Nation, is because the cabal knows that Moi is too week to win the presidency, hence the decision to use him only for that job.
For him, the only way Moi could win would be if he were to be rigged in, holding that the next President is either Ruto or ODM leader Raila Odinga.
“Gideon’s presidential quest is laughable. He is used as an instrument of division and our people have known that the Deep State is not even interested in him,” the lawmaker, an ally of Ruto, told the paper.
“They just want him to divide Ruto’s vote in Rift Valley, which will not happen. The race is between two people — Raila and Ruto, the rest are people who cannot sell themselves hence banking on endorsements and rigging,” he further says.
Mumias East MP Benjamin Washiali echoed the remarks, but pointed out that Moi is too weak to be supported by the Deep State for the top seat and shouldn’t be seen challenging Ruto.
“What will Deep State help him with? Deep State has a very small contribution; Deep State can only assist you if you also have support but how can they support you from nothing?” the MP is quoted.
But Moi’s allies have said that it is his time to lead, stating that a big declaration about his presidential candidature will soon be made
