28 Safaricom Agents Sacked Over Fraud

Safaricom dismissed 28 workers for fraud-related offenses in the fiscal year ending March 2021, up from 16 the previous year.

According to the telco’s latest sustainability report, it conducted 36 investigations into potential fraud, fired 28 workers, and warned 19 others.

One instance was sent to the appropriate government bodies for further investigation.

The bulk of the instances, 22, concerning data privacy, with eight involving policy violations and four concerning SIM swaps. Asset misappropriation was implicated in two cases.

Since the government established regulations restricting the State’s and enterprises’ management of information to avoid misuse, a punishment of up to Sh5 million or 1% of yearly turnover for corporations has been a significant topic of concern.

According to a study by business consultancy company Ernst & Young, 41% of companies give their clients’ personal information to third-party service providers.

It was discovered that 53% of businesses do not obtain their consumers’ consent, therefore breaching the legislation that protects sensitive private information.
