Prof Isaac Ongubo Kibwage, who has been in an acting capacity as vice-chancellor of Egerton University was on Wednesday confirmed for the position.
In a statement, Acting University Council chairperson Dr. Wilson Kipruto Ronnoh said the move was reached after consultation with CS Prof George Magoha.
“Following the interview process carried out by the Public Service Commission (PSC), and after consultation with the Cabinet Secretary for Education, in exercise of the provision of section 35(1)(a)(v) of the University Act, 2012, we , the Egerton University Council, have or this 5th day of October 2021 appointed Prof. Isaac Ongubo Kibwage, HSC as the new Vice Chancellor of Egerton University,” the University Council said in a statement.
Prof Kibwage, who becomes the sixth VC at the premises, beat former deputy Vice-chancellor in Charge of Academics Affairs Prof Alexander Kigunzu Kahi, Prof Peninah Aloo Obundhi current deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Academic, Research and Studies Affairs at Karatina University and Prof Prisca Tuitoek currently the deputy Vice Chancellor Academic and students Affairs at the Murang’a University of Technology to the position.
Other candidates were Prof Bockline Omedo Bebe the acting deputy Vice-chancellor Division of Research and Extension at Egerton University, Prof Benedict Mwavu Mutua, a professor of Water Resources, Hydraulics and Environmental Engineering at Kibabi University, and Prof Douglas Shitanda who is the Deputy Vice-chancellor Administration, Planning and finance at Machakos University.
Prof Ongubo’s appointment takes effect immediately.
He replaces Rose Mwonya who resigned earlier in June.
