It is no longer a secret that the powers that be are very keen on ensuring that their preffered name succeeds President Uhuru Kenyatta as the next President, Kenyans have once again been told.
Uhuru has given every indication that he seeks to influence the outcome of the 2022 top race, with the Mt Kenya Foundation, which is closely allied to him, also kicking off plans to do the very same.
Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Central Region Chair Lucy Nyambura has said that these are indeed attempts to dictate who leads the country next, suggesting that the efforts to realize the plan will most likely succeed.
She told the Nation that apart from identifying the next President, it is also clear that Uhuru and his team will also seek to pick the running mate for them as part of the larger succession plan.
This, she says, is where Mt Kenya leaders close to Uhuru like Murang’a Woman Representative Sabina Chege come in, as their allegiance to Uhuru and their leadership qualities could land them the seat.
“The President no doubt likes and supports her and that is a major plus for her given that it is no longer a secret that State House is actively involved in managing its next occupant,” she told the paper.
She says that actually, Chege is among the most likely to be picked if the next running mate is to be a female politician, the other one being Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru.
“She is emerging as one of the powerful female politicians in the Mt Kenya region and cuts a personality who knows how to exercise loyalty to her line of duty,” she is further quoted.
Contacted for her comments about the running mate position, Chege said that her focus is currently on the Murang’a gubernatorial seat but she wouldn’t reject the opportunity if called upon to take it.
But contrary to Ms Nyambura’s remarks, reports have emerged that Uhuru is very keen on free and fair polls, as was said by ODM leader Raila Odinga on Tuesday, to avoid post election wrangles.
