Raila set for Ukambani tour amid jitters in Kalonzo camp

ODM leader Raila Odinga will take his ‘Azimio la Umoja’ crusade to Ukambani, the political backyard of Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

The former Prime Minister is expected to hold a rally in Makueni County to be followed by a couple of stopovers in various towns lined up for Friday.

Interestingly, Kalonzo will not be playing host to Raila. Instead, the three governors from the region, Kivutha Kibwana (Makueni), Alfred Mutua (Machakos), and Charity Ngilu from Kitui appear set to receive the ODM leader.

Indeed, the three county chiefs have been holding meetings with Raila in the capital ahead of the eagerly-anticipated tour. On Wednesday night, for instance, the Orange party leader ‘shared a cup of coffee’ with Mutua, Kibwana, and Ngilu in Nairobi, as their camps finalized preparations for the Friday rally.

Prior to this meeting, Raila held consultations with a delegation of a section of grassroots leaders from the three counties the previous evening at a city hotel. Kibwana and Ngilu were in attendance.

And on Thursday morning, Kibwana paid a visit to ODM party headquarters in Lavington.

“In the spirit of Oneness & Partnership, Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana  paid a courtesy call at Chungwa House today.” ODM tweeted after Kibwana visit

All the latest moves perhaps indicating Raila is eager to work with the three governors given that Kalonzo has been adamant he is in the Okoa Kenya Alliance (OKA) to stay. In fact, Kalonzo has been categorical that he would no longer back the ODM leader for the Presidency having agreed to be his running mate on two occasions.

And Kalonzo has not hidden his frustration with Odinga’s decision to tour Ukambani without his blessings.

“Tomorrow (Friday) Raila will be in Makueni without Kalonzo. Imagine that, yet I have stood with him for 10 years. But I am asking our people in Makueni to welcome him,” Kalonzo said on Thursday while in Embu County.

And the three governors seem to want to get Raila as much support from the region as possible given that they have organized a meeting between the former PM and local leaders from Kitui, Machakos, and Makueni in Wote town.
