Deputy President William Ruto’s camp have finally broken their silence after Ukambani governors vowed to support Raila’s presidential bid in the upcoming general election.

In his tour to Ukambani, the former Prime Minister was received by area governors Kivutha Kibwana (Makueni), Charity Ngilu (Kitui), and Alfred Mutua (Machakos).

This happened at a time Deputy President William Ruto also toured Kitui County.

During the DP’s meet the people tour, his political allies claimed the Governors from the region have been blackmailed to support the Opposition leader’s bid for the Presidency.

They alleged that Mutua, Ngilu, and Kibwana either have to support Odinga or face corruption charges. In their opinion, the three county chiefs only opted to be with Raila to save themselves from prosecution.

“Governors are supporting Raila Odinga because they have been told if they support Dr Ruto they will be prosecuted,” said Kitui East MP Nimrod Mbai.

The lawmaker claimed that state agencies were using Governors to popularize Odinga’s candidacy against their wishes.

His sentiments received support from his Machakos Township counterpart Victor Munyaka who said Governors were supporting Odinga to secure their freedom after allegedly misappropriating public funds.

“They are following Raila to secure state protection for the crimes they have committed while in office,” said Mr. Munyaka

“He (Raila) can only protect you for the next 9 months.” He charged

They claimed Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru was threatened with trumped-up charges immediately after she defected to the Hustler Movement, a move aimed at coercing her to change her stance.
