Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa has come out gun blazing against the arrest of Football Kenya Federation boss Nick Mwendwa.
Mwendwa was arrested on Friday evening at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Westlands, Nairobi, where he was meeting Harambee Stars players ahead of the Kenya- Rwanda World Cup qualifiers match on Monday, November 15.
He was taken to the DCI headquaters where he was questioned on how FKF spent Sh 480 million advanced to them from 2016 by the sports, Arts and Social development for running football activities.
He was also grilled on Sh244 million, an amount given to the federation to prepare Harambee Stars for the 2011 African Cup of
Speaking hour later after his arrest, Rashid Echesa said that the arrest of Nick Mwendwa was illegal and that it showed how the government has not taken sports seriously to tell the FKF boss to account for money in the docket.
“The money they are saying that Nick Mwendwa should account for over 260 million since 2016 that tells you that even the government is not taking sports seriously because of Ksh 260 million is payment for an international player for two weeks. It is very shameful for the government to tell the world that that is the amount it has sponsored the football with,” Rashid Echesa has fired.
Mwendwa has been detained at Gigiri Police station for further grilling which will continue today.
He will be arraigned in court on Monday
