Mt Kenya Governors Claim Ruto’s Careless Utterances During Campaigns May Lead To Chaos

Deputy President William Ruto’s new political behaviour could promote chaos in the Mt Kenya region, area governors have warned.

They have cautioned that Ruto’s new campaign strategy of attacking area leaders while there might end up giving unwanted results in the coming days.

The county chiefs are unhappy with Ruto’s attacks on area leaders opposed to him, whom he has been publicly bashing for allegedly misleading voters.

But the governors have reminded him that these are elected leaders and that the remarks could result in angry response from their constituents.

They are of the idea that interpreting the unsavoury remarks as undermining their right to elect their leaders, Ruto could promote acts of violence.

“The latest unwarranted attacks targeted Governors Kiraitu Murungi of Meru County and James Nyoro of Kiambu County, and came soon after similar attacks on Governor Francis Kimemia of Nyandarua County at Magumu,” they said through their Central Region Economic Bloc (Cereb) chair Kimemia on Tuesday.

Ruto’s attack on Murungi came on Monday, when he accused the governor of forcing the Ameru to support ODM boss Raila Odinga, his (Ruto) rival.

Earlier he had said the same about Nyoro. The two are among the seven Mt Kenya county bosses who have picked the former Prime Minister over him.

The Cereb now wants the relevant state agencies to come in and look into the issue before they begin causing chaos among the people.

It has also called upon Ruto and members of his camp to be more sober in their pursuit of the vote, calling for tolerance and civility.

“We urge all those seeking elective political positions to uphold tolerance, civility, integrity and the Rule of Law and we urge all Institutions responsible for national cohesion, rule of law and security to scale up surveillance and take appropriate and immediate legal action without fear or favour,” Kimemia added.
