According to a report dubbed Digital 2021: Kenya released by Data Portal in February, mobile connections grew by 11% between January 2020 and January 2021 to 59.24 million.
The report showed there were 21.75 million internet users in Kenya during the period under review.
Kenyan celebrities, politicians, and media personalities have in the recent past flaunted their expensive smartphones to all and sundry.

In August, Kenyan musician turned entrepreneur Akothee showed off her expensive phones on Instagram.
The businesswoman displayed seven phones on her table and revealed three of the phones cost a whopping KSh 450,000.
In her caption, she wondered if she is being too extravagant to amass a hefty amount in phones but explained that she is too addicted to shopping and that can't stop her from buying finer things.

In October 2019, Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) secretary-general Francis Atwoli stunned Kenyans after throwing away a KSh 150,000 iPhone on live TV.
Atwoli had just arrived for a show and was exchanging pleasantries with the host when someone made a call to him.
Having been schooled differently, well, in the era of WhatsApp and Twitter, others would have received the call to say they were on air, but Atwoli did not even bother to check who the caller was.
Whether urgent or not, it did not matter; the trade unionist took the phone out of his inner coat pocket, put it on silent mode, and threw it away like a child playing with a toy.
And with a thud, the phone could be heard landing on the other side of the studio, as the host cringed, worried the phone could have shattered.

Betty Musambi is a Kenyan radio presenter.
In July 2020, her husband, Bonnie Musambi (a Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) radio presenter), again surprised her with a KSh 1 million cheque and iPhone worth KSh 150,000 on her 31st birthday.
Vera Sidika was born on September 30, 1989, in the coastal city of Mombasa. S
he is regarded as one of Kenya's most controversial female celebrities due to her extraordinary and lavish lifestyle.
She was thrust into the limelight after appearing in P-Unit's single, "You Guy", released in 2012. Afterwards, Vera used all means, including bleaching her skin and increasing the size of her hips and breasts to achieve the 'perfect shape'.
This earned her thousands of 'admirers' on Instagram, where she has over 2.1 million followers.

Vera previously displayed her Blackberry Porsche, which cost KSh 170,000.
She also owns an iPhone 8.
