The Director of Criminal investigations (DCI), George Kinoti, has been handed four months in prison for contempt of court.
Justice Anthony Mrima found Kinoti guilty of failing to return a firearm seized from businessman Jimi Wanjigi.
The DCI boss has been ordered to surrender to prison authorities within seven days to start his four-month term in jail.
According to the court, Kinoti defied a court order compelling him to return firearms confiscated from businessman Jimmy Wanjigi.

The order addressed to the DCI, Police IG and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) was issued in January 2019.
The court also sanctioned the Inspector-General of police Hillary Mutyambai to effect Kinoti's arrest should he fail to present himself to prison within the seven days.
Further, the judge stated that should Mutyambai fail to execute Kinoti's arrest, the warrant of arrest issued against Kinoti will be active even after he (Kinoti) leaves office.
The DCI boss had been required to appear before the court on Monday, September 27, 2021, but failed despite being summoned.
The firearms were confiscated from Wanjigi's Muthaiga home in 2017 after the hotly contested presidential vote.

Among the weapons Kinoti was ordered to return to Wanjigi in January 2019 are one pistol, make of Smith and Wesson, one Glock pistol and an assault rifle.
In 2020, Wanjigi, through his lawyer Willis Otieno, filed a contempt suit against Kinoti for disrespecting court orders directed to the police to release the confiscated guns back to him.
In the case, the businessman explained that the police forced themselves into his house without a search warrant from the court and took away his firearms.
He said there was no proof of abuse of the weapons, nor had he been charged in any court for crimes.
Justice Chacha Mwita, who was presiding over the case in June 2019, ruled that the state acted irrationally by carting away Wanjigi’s guns while he still held a valid license to keep the same.
His lawyer Otieno told the court that the police raided his house without a search warrant and took his firearms.

He further argued that there was no proof of misuse of the guns, nor had he been charged before any court.
