It is not every day that you get to board a matatu whose conductor is a gospel musician ready to entertain you as you enjoy your trip.

But for one, Joshua Kipruto Kimungot, this is his way of life.

He has emerged as one of the most talented and upcoming gospel artistes in the North Rift region.

Stage name, Msanii Jokii

Kimungot, whose stage name is Msanii Jokii, juggles between the music recording studio and the Eldoret bus terminal where he works as a matatu conductor.

“Once I collect bus fare from the passengers, I enjoy performing to them some of my songs much to their admiration. Most of them board my matattu because of the entertainment I offer them free of charge,” he told TUKO.co.ke.

He is also a renowned MC and comedian famed as Mzee Tarumbeta on his official Facebook page to support his music.

The 30-year-old was born and raised in Muchukwo village in Kerio Valley. He is a fourth born in a family of eight.

Kimungot said that his father, Pastor Daniel Chelimo Tarumbeta, an equally talented soloist, inspired him to sing.

He said that he grew up seeing him play the keyboard and the trumpet, much to the admiration of worshippers at the Muchukwo AIC church.

Still faces hurdles

But even with 32 songs to his name, Kimungot indicated that he still struggles in life because, like many upcoming musicians, he lacks sponsors to help him produce his music.

To date, he has at least 300 songs that are yet to be produced due to a lack of financial support.

In his bid to raise funds to make music, Kimungot works as a conductor in Eldoret town serving matatus plying the Chepkoilel-Town service route.

“I was not lucky to go past form four due to school fees challenges. And I didn’t allow this to dampen my dream, that is why I relocated to Eldoret and worked as a matatu conductor. It is a very challenging job bu,t the money I raise here is what I take to the studio to record my music,” he said.

Previously worked in a supermarket

Before joining the matatu sector, he worked at a supermarket as a shop attendant and Dola Unga Millers as a loader, both in Eldoret town.

And from all his earnings, Joshua has only been able to record 32 of his songs with only six videos.

From his demanding schedule as a tout, Joshua arranges with his boss to be allowed two hours on Sundays to help him rush to the studio to do what he loves most music.

“I am married with one child,d and I belief if I find an opportunity tomakeo quality music by way of funding, I am certain I will emerge as a top artiste of my time. However, I find it hard currently juggling between fending for family and setting aside money for music production,” he appeals.

Inspired fellow students

Throughout primary school and secondary, he became the centre of attraction to fellow students as he performed songs by established artists earning him food and money from students and teachers.

He became his Secondary School, the entertainment prefect. One of his famous songs is “Matinama Ngurie”, a gospel worship song.

He appeals to leaders and Kenyans of goodwill to help intervene.

“I believe that music is my calling. All those interested in helping me realise my dream, can intervene,” he said.

The Kapchomuso Mixed Day Secondary School alumnus has also developed a comedy based on a mobile money transfer service.
