Armpit Allergy: What It Can Be, Symptoms and Treatment

Armpit allergy can be noticed through the appearance of some symptoms such as intense itching, blisters, red spots, redness or burning sensation, for example. This inflammatory reaction can happen due to the use of deodorants with irritating substances, such as fragrances and alcohol, for example, or due to the friction of the skin with synthetic fabrics or shaving with a razor or depilatory creams, for example.

Thus, when the first symptoms of allergy appear, it is most recommended to wash the armpits with plenty of water and neutral pH soap, to avoid worsening the reaction, followed by a little soothing cream, with aloe, for example, to moisturize and soothe the skin. If symptoms do not improve or worsening is noticed, it is recommended to consult a dermatologist so that the most appropriate treatment can be indicated.

Causes of Armpit Allergy

Armpit allergy can be triggered by several factors, the main ones being:

  • Use of deodorants with irritating substances, such as parabens, alcohol and fragrances, for example;
  • Friction of the armpit with the skin itself;
  • Underarm friction with synthetic fabrics such as lycra, polyester or nylon;
  • Excessive heat, being more common to happen in the summer;
  • Excessive sweating, which may be related to heat or physical activity;
  • Drying of the region, which makes the skin rougher and favors friction;
  • Blade depilation or depilatory creams;

Thus, it is important to identify the factor responsible for the allergy so that it is possible to avoid or adopt strategies that help to alleviate and prevent the onset of symptoms.

Main symptoms

Armpit allergy symptoms can be noticed as soon as you use some irritating product on the spot, after waxing or over time, the main ones being:

  • Burning sensation and irritated skin;
  • Blisters or red spots on the skin;
  • Lump in the armpit;
  • Very intense itching;
  • Redness;
  • Local desquamation in some cases.

For people who are more sensitive, you may notice more severe allergy symptoms, such as swelling in the face, eyes or tongue, a feeling of something caught in the throat, or difficulty breathing. In these cases, it is advisable to go to the hospital immediately to take an antihistamine and a corticosteroid directly into the vein, avoiding serious complications such as respiratory arrest.

Also check that other problems can cause red spots on the skin.

How to confirm armpit allergy

To confirm the allergy in the armpit, it is recommended that the dermatologist be consulted so that the signs and symptoms presented are observed and it is possible to indicate the possible cause of the symptoms. An allergy test can also be performed to confirm the diagnosis and more accurately identify the component that could be causing the allergy. Find out how allergy testing is done.

What to do

When allergy symptoms arise in allergy, it is important to take action quickly, if necessary:

  1. Wash the underarm area with plenty of water and soap neutral pH;
  2. Apply hypoallergenic or soothing products to the skin, like creams or lotions with aloe, chamomile or lavender, for example, which soothe and moisturize the skin;
  3. Apply cold water compresses over the armpits, to reduce the symptoms of irritation and a burning sensation.

After washing and moisturizing the skin, it is expected that after 2 hours the symptoms will disappear completely, but if this does not happen or if the symptoms worsen, it is recommended that you consult your dermatologist as soon as possible. Also, if symptoms develop into difficulty breathing or a feeling of something stuck in the throat, it is recommended that you go quickly to the hospital or emergency room, as these are signs of an anaphylactic reaction, which is a medical emergency.

After evaluating the presenting symptoms, the dermatologist may recommend the use of antihistamine drugs, such as loratadine or fexofenadine hydrochloride (Allegra), or steroids to promote symptom relief. In cases where there is a lot of redness or itchiness in the armpits, ointments with antihistaminic properties can also be recommended, which help to alleviate these symptoms.
