The incident comes barely three days after 10 people died and several others injured after a Passenger Service Vehicle (PSV) van they were travelling in ran over an IED along the Arabia – Mandera Road.

Reports indicated that police had intelligence reports on the impending attack, following a tip-off by area residents.

North Eastern Regional Commander, George Seda, stated that they received reports of the incident from residents who were also using the road in the morning hours.

Witnesses claimed that the driver of the PSV ignored orders by the police to stop moments before the attack.

“Before the explosion, police who were on the road stopped us but the driver did not stop. Then a few minutes later, I heard an explosion, after which I found myself in hospital,” a survivor of the attack, Abdi Ibrahim stated.

Preliminary reports indicated that the IED targeted a contingent of General Service Unit (GSU) officers who were on their way to Mandera.

Residents told police that they noticed suspicious activities by unidentified armed men and tipped off the GSU officers, who flagged down vehicles that were heading the Mandera way.

Area residents managed to arrest one suspect, who confessed to having been among a group of six who set up the explosive.
