County Speaker Arrested for Breaking Into Govt Office at 3am, Stealing Files

  • Migori County Speaker, Boaz Okoth, was on Wednesday, February 2, arrested by police officers for allegedly breaking into the county finance offices.

Speaking to the media, Migori County Police Boss, Mark Wanjala, confirmed that Okoth and seven others allegedly broke into the offices at around 3 a.m.

Working in cahoots with the seven, Okoth made away with an unknown number of files and computers, which they moved to his office.

Wanjala revealed that police received a tip off from members of the public and swiftly responded. They trailed the eight to the County Speaker’s office.

“Our officers rushed there and found them moving files from the County Finance offices,” the County Commander stated.

Upon realizing that their goose was cooked, the accused locked themselves in the office until 8.00am when they surrendered to the officers after a five-hour stalemate.

“When they saw the officers, they locked themselves in the speaker’s (Okoth) office. He opened the door in the morning after being convinced by the officers,” Wanjala told the media.

Okoth was then ferried to the Migori County Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) where he is being held pending investigations on the matter.

“He has been asked to record a statement explaining why he decided to break into the offices and with men who accompanied him and were not members of the county assembly” added Wanjala.

Okoth was spared of burglary charges as the latter only applies when an incident involves a dwelling place of an individual. The DCI preferred that he be charged with office breaking instead.

In addition, the police recovered the stolen files and have called upon the Migori County Finance Officer to verify the documents and confirm if any files are missing.

Notably, this is not the first time Okoth has had run-ins with the law. On September 29, 2021, he was apprehended by detectives in Nairobi in a case related to the chaos that ensued in the assembly

A female MCA broke her arm after goons reportedly stormed into the assembly and interfered with the motion seeking to eject Obado as Governor.
