Opposed to Burnley in the 28th Premier League round, Chelsea quietly won 4-0 to consolidate their place on the podium. At the same time, Newcastle also won their match against Brighton. Aston Villa and Brentford have made a cardboard.
A few moments after Leicester’s narrow victory over Jesse Marsch’s Leeds (1-0), the 28th day of the Premier League continued this Saturday with five matches on the afternoon multiplex program. Third (50 pts) before kick-off, Chelsea moved to Turf Moor to challenge Burnley (18th, 21 pts). The objective was simple for the Blues: win to consolidate their third place and get closer to Liverpool, who will challenge West Ham in the evening (6:30 p.m.). The Clarets wanted to create a surprise to temporarily get out of the red zone. Facing a team looking for points in the maintenance race, Thomas Tuchel’s players quickly came under great pressure after having started well. The first opportunity was however for the visitors with this stoppage of Pope in front of James (14th).
It was far too tender to worry locals who responded quickly. On a cross from Lennon, Rodriguez saw Thiago Silva save his team on his line (16th). The meeting was not very rich in opportunities and McNeil, after a hazardous exit from Mendy, missed the frame in good position (30th). At the break, the two teams therefore returned to the locker room with a goalless draw, but the scoreboard would quickly change. On the right side of the opposing area, James had fun with McNeil before finishing the job with a shot from the right for the opener (48th, 0-1). Now launched, the players of the former PSG coach began to unfold. On a cross from Pulisic, Havertz scored with a header with the help of the post (53rd, 0-2).
Newcastle still fit, Toney on fire with Brentford
In great shape, the German winger even went there for his double in a few minutes with a new goal on a service from James, now a passer (55th, 0-3). With this very nice lead, Chelsea left the ball a little more to Burnley who tried to approach Mendy’s goal but it didn’t give much. Worse, on the other side of the field, the Blues drove the point home a little more with an achievement by Pulisic (69th, 0-4). With this new goal, Thomas Tuchel then turned, leaving in particular James and Kanté to launch Kovacic and Loftus-Cheek. Opposite, Sean Dyche also multiplied the changes to try to save the honor, in vain. With this easy success, Chelsea consolidated its third place. For its part, Burnley remained eighteenth and therefore in the red zone, with an eleventh defeat this season in the league.
In the other meetings, Newcastle (14th, 25 pts) wanted to continue their good series when receiving Brighton (11th, 33 pts). Undefeated in 2022, the Magpies quickly made the difference thanks to goals from Fraser (12th) and Schar (14th). In the second half, Dunk (55th) revived the visitors but the locals held on to this result to win 2-1. With this seventh game without defeat in a row in the PL, Eddie Howe’s team remained fourteenth in the standings, when Brighton fell to thirteenth place. At the same time, Aston Villa hit Southampton (4-0) when Brentford inflicted a 3-1 on Norwich on their lawn thanks to a hat-trick from Toney! For its part, Crystal Palace won 2-0 against Wolves.
