Lufthansa’s Eurowings Discover Launches Direct Flights to Victoria Falls

Lufthansa Group’s Eurowings Discover has launched direct flights from Frankfurt, Germany, to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. It becomes the first direct passenger flight between Zimbabwe and Europe since Air Zimbabwe discontinued its flights to London, United Kingdom, in 2011

The airline has scheduled three weekly direct flights from Frankfurt to Victoria Falls International Airport until mid-November. The route operates southbound on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, and returns northbound on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. It mainly uses 283-seat A330-300s, the airline’s primary widebody.

Until now, passengers traveling from Europe or beyond were limited to connecting in Johannesburg, Nairobi, or Addis Ababa. They can now also transit in Frankfurt, connecting from Lufthansa to Eurowings Discover on one ticket.

While Eurowings Discover is obviously the longest route overall, Ethiopian Airlines’ Addis-Victoria Falls remains the longest non-stop.

Zimbabwe is among 24 destinations that Eurowings Discover plans to fly into this year, and Victoria Falls will be its 5th destination in Africa after Mombasa in Kenya, Windhoek in Namibia, Zanzibar in Tanzania, and Mauritius.

Improved air connectivity with various source markets around the world is expected to play a key role in the recovery of Zimbabwe’s tourism sector, trade and investment. Germany is the second largest European tourism source market for Zimbabwe after the United Kingdom.
