Simba blame Onyango’s agent for Yanga transfer talk

Tanzanian rivals Simba SC and Young Africans (Yanga) are locked in a battle to secure the services of Kenyan defender Joash Onyango.

The Harambee Stars centre-back’s two-year contract at Simba expires in June of 2022, and media reports in Tanzania name Yanga as among a host of clubs interested in signing him on a free transfer.

Simba spokesperson Ahmed Ali told Nairobi News the reigning Tanzanian champions intend to discuss fresh terms with the former Gor Mahia defender but will only commence talks at the end of the season.

“We’ve not been able to talk with him because of the tight fixture schedule with the Caf Confederation Cup games. He is an important player and I’m optimistic new will agree on fresh terms,” said Ali.

Ali also appeared to blame Onyango’s agent for the hype surrounding his rumoured switch to Yanga, claiming it is a ploy to up the stakes ahead of the contract talks.

Onyango currently earns Sh350,000 per month at Simba and is believed to be demanding an increment of Sh150,000 plus a sign-on fee of Sh2 million to extend his stay.

“His agent might be behind this so he can be handed a higher salary. We will engage him after the Caf game against Orlando Pirates.”

Simba will play host Orlando Pirates to the South African side with the second leg primed for a week later.

Meanwhile, Yanga vice-chairman Frederick Mwakalebela has not ruled out the possibility of signing Onyango.

“He is a good player Onyango but we only sign players based on the recommendation from our coach.”
