Woman found with stolen TV remanded for two weeks

A woman who was arrested in Kondele, Kisumu County with a TV set that is believed to have been stolen in Parklands, Nairobi will remain in police custody for two weeks.

Elizabeth Akinyi was denied bail for the period after the prosecution presented an affidavit at the Kibera Law Courts opposing the same, saying the accused is still under investigation with her accomplices yet to be arrested.

The accused is accused of breaking into a house in Parklands where she stole household items, including the TV all valued at Sh394, 577. Other items that were stolen during the burglary that happened on May 26, 2022 include a laptop, a food processing machine and a Samsung microwave. All the stolen items belonged to a Mr Ahmed Maalim.

Ms Akinyi is also charged with handling stolen goods contrary to section 322 of the Penal Code.

On the day the theft happened, Mr Maalim and his wife left their house locked as they went visiting relatives in another neighbourhood in Nairobi. On returning home, they found the house had been broken into and the said items stolen.

They reported the matter at Parklands police station. A security guard was later arrested and charged with negligence since the house could not have been broken into without his knowledge considering its proximity to the gate.

Police officers reviewed CCTV footage from the neighbouring house and identified a car that the suspected burglars used to get away. Ms Akinyi was later arrested with the stolen TV set.

The accused denied the charges before Senior Resident magistrate Mwaniki Kamau. The case will be mentioned on June 29, 2022 when the decision on bail and bonds will be revised by her trial court.
