A woman aged 80 died by suicide after jumping into a 50 feet deep borehole that had water in a village in Nyamira County.

Police are investigating the claims she jumped into the borehole. There are claims she may have been pushed therein.

The family told police Maritina Ochenge jumped into the borehole on Tuesday afternoon without provocation and efforts to

save her from the hole did not bear any fruits.

The incident happened at Nyaibara Ibere village.

The body was later removed and taken to a local mortuary.

Police said they are investigating the claims she jumped into the borehole that was in use.

In a separate incident in Nyabite area, Nyamira, the body of one Peter Kamanda, 21 was discovered at his grandmother’s house.

Police who visited the scene said the deceased was found hanging from the window grill with a sisal rope tied loosely around his neck.

His neck was also seen with strangulation marks and is suspected to have been killed somewhere else before being staged there.

Police said the Tuesday incident is under probe.

Cases of suicide have been on the rise in the past months in an alarming rate amid calls to address the trend.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says such cases are attributed to joblessness, the breakup of relationships or a death, academic failures or pressures, legal difficulties, financial difficulties, bullying, previous suicide attempts, history of suicide in a family, alcoholism and substance misuse, depression and bipolar disorder.
