Uasin Gishu County Commissioner Edison Nyale Monday threatened to sack chiefs over poor attendance at Jamhuri Day celebrations.

Nyale, in a video making rounds on the internet, accused the local administrators of failure to execute their work in mobilizing people to attend the national function.

“Chiefs, is it that you can no longer do your work? Or how else can you explain this? This means people no longer have faith in you so when you tell them to show up for events like this, where very senior people like the county commissioner and the governor, who is coming to listen to their needs, they cannot come,” he said.

“Are we supposed to address empty seats? Do you want us to take action on all those caps you are wearing? We do not want to witness such a low turnout from Uasin Gishu, the president’s county.”

Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii refused to blame the chiefs claiming there were people trying to “sabotage” his government.

“I hear you on the issue of low turnout, but I do not want to blame the chiefs for it. I have been told that some people are sabotaging my government, and I do not know yet who they are and if you are among the suspects,” said Bii.

He urged the chiefs to hold national events in high regard, arguing matters of national holidays are of very big importance.

“Before, you would see flags at every shop as it remains closed until speeches are done.”
