Sirisia MP John Waluke
A businesswoman who had been jailed alongside Sirisia MP John Waluke was Tuesday released from jail.
Businesswoman Grace Wakhungu was released on a cash bail of Sh20 million pending a hearing of an appeal challenging her conviction in the Sh313 million maize case.
The court of appeal granted her bail following an appeal she filed in October.
Waluke and his business partner Wakhungu were in October 2022 sent back to prison by the High court after it upheld a decision by the Magistrates court that found the duo guilty of fraudulently acquiring shs 313 million from a government agency.
Wakhungu got a 69-year jail term while Waluke got a 67-year term.
Both were given an option of a Sh1 billion fine.
They were both directors of Erad Suppliers
It is alleged that they fraudulently acquired the shs 313 million purporting it to be the costs of storage of 40,000 metric tonnes of white maize purportedly incurred by Chelsea Freights.
They were aggrieved with their conviction and sentencing and subsequently filed an appeal at the High court
Judge Esther Maina said the sentences were not excessive but within the law.
She also said the invoice upon which the claim for payment was based was a forgery.
She becomes the latest to taste freedom in a series.
Dozens of people have had freedoms in a manner that puzzles them.
