Machakos University Closed Due to Frequent Demonstrations Over Insecurity

Machakos University has been closed indefinitely due to frequent demonstrations by students over insecurity.
In a memo released today the the University vice chancellor Lucy Irungu, Said closing of the university is in the interest of security of the students and the staff.
“Due to the evolving insecurity situation around the university and the ongoing students’ demonstrations a special meeting convened on 7th December 2022 resolved that in the interest of the security of staff and students, The university be closed with immediate effect. This is therefore to inform all students to vacate the university premises with immediate effect. Further communication will be made in due course.”
The latest demonstrations started today when students were informed that one of them who was shot by a stray bullet on Monday during demonstrations died while receiving treatment at the hospital.
Police in Machakos on Sunday arrested one of their colleagues for allegedly robbing a university student.
The students have been demonstrating following attacks during the day and at night.
