Ruto Appoints Ex-KDF Chief to Govt

  • President William Ruto has appointed former Chief of Defence Forces General Samson Mwathethe as a Non-Executive Chairperson of the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI). 

    In a Gazette notice dated Thursday, February 2, President William Ruto confirmed the appointment of Mwathethe as the substantive chair. 

    In addition, the President revoked the appointment of John Waithaka who was formerly appointed by retired President Uhuru Kenyatta. 

    Mwathethe retired from the CDF position in 2020 after five years at the helm of the Kenya Defence Forces.

    He ascended to the position in 2015 to succeed former Chief Julius Karangi in what was a culmination of his career in the military spanning over three decades. 

    After his retirement, Mwathethe was appointed as the Chairperson of Kenya’s power-generating corporation, KenGen, a position he served until his recent appointment.

    In addition, the President announced a host of appointments to various parastatals and government bodies including the appointment of Dr Jane Lagat as the Chairperson of the Women Enterprise Fund Advisory Board, for a period of three years. 

    Ruto also announced the revocation of a host of former appointments made during the regime of former President Uhuru Kenyatta. 

    Among the corporations affected include the Women Enterprise Fund Advisory Board, State Corporations Advisory Committee, and the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
