Police arrested nine Ethiopians Saturday without traveling documents

Police arrested nine Ethiopians Saturday without traveling documents in Voi, Taita Taveta County.

Police said they were on routine patrol Saturday at 1 am when they noticed a suspicious vehicle (Toyota Probox) within Caltex along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

On noticing the officers, the driver sped off towards Mwatate direction with officers on hot pursuit.

On reaching the Mariwenyi area, their vehicle was blocked by a lorry that had a mechanical problem, which had broken down in the middle of the road.

The driver abandoned the vehicle and ran away towards the nearby thicket.

The police searched the vehicle and identified nine middle-aged male aliens suspected to be Ethiopians.

The nine were arrested and placed in custody pending arraignment in court.

The vehicle was escorted to the station.

Ethiopians do not require a visa to visit Kenya.

Ethiopians visiting Kenya should have a passport, and proof of yellow fever vaccination among other documents.

Dozens of Ethiopians are arrested for illegal entry into Kenya.

Some are deported.

Most of them are smuggled while in transit to other areas like the Middle East for jobs.
