First-of-its-kind US$30M facility to strengthen ADM’s presence in the global probiotics market | Food Business Africa Magazine

SPAIN – ADM, a global leader in food, pet and animal nutrition, has opened a production facility in Spain worth more than US$30 million which will produce probiotics and postbiotics among other health and wellness products.
With consumers becoming increasingly aware and mindful of their gut health together with an increased tendency to consume healthier foods and nutrient-rich supplements, the global probiotics market is rapidly expanding.
According to data from ResearchAndMarkets.com, the global probiotics industry is valued at an estimated US$59.3 billion as of 2022 and is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.6%.
ADM intends to tap into that potential with the construction of the world’s first production hub which will serve several key global markets and significantly boost the company’s capability to produce highly the sought-after health and wellness products.
The plant will be the first of its kind as it will produce both probiotics and postbiotics, paving way for ADM to realise its target of US$10 billion in revenue generated from health and wellness products within 10 years.
The site will be strategically located near ADM’s research and development centre at the university of Valencia and will start with the production of BPL1, a weight-management probiotic that can be incorporated into dairy products and other foods.
The site will also produce a heat-treated BPL1 postbiotic version for metabolic wellness together with other proprietary strains.
The production hub will also support the growth and supply of ADM’s other probiotic and postbiotic ingredients like the Bio-Kult brand, to key markets in the US, Asia-Pacific and Europe.
According to the nutrition solutions specialist, this hub will have a production capacity of 50 tonnes per year representing a five-fold increase in the company’s production capacity.
ADM DE11 Receives “No Objection” Letter from Health Canada
Earlier, ADM received a letter of no objection for DE111 from Canada’s Food Directorate, paving way for the introduction of spore-forming probiotics in the Canadian market.
“This is a big win for our customers in Canada as brands that wish to include DE111® in their food products in Canada can proceed with confidence that they may make probiotic claims on the product based on the guidelines outlined by Health Canada’s Food Directorate,” said Dieter Neumann, Vice President, Spores and Enzymes Platform.
“DE111® retains functionality through challenging processing conditions that may otherwise damage conventional lactic acid bacteria probiotics – making it an exceptional option for food products.”
