The court Monday allowed the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) to withdraw the charges against Standard Media group journalist Laban Cliff Onserio.
This is after an application was made before the court to have the matter withdrawn on grounds that there is no sufficient evidence to charge him.
Onserio had been arrested by police from Anti Terror Police Unit on December 18, 2022, while in possession of a stun grenade, allegedly threatening to use it to attack security guards.
He was arrested at the Holy Family Basilica parking by detectives who were called in by the church’s security guards after an altercation.
Onserio formerly served as Deputy Communications Director at State House’s Presidential Delivery Unit (PDU), and as an anchor at NTV.
He had gone to pick up his car at the cathedral’s commercial parking lot after a night out when he picked a quarrel with guards.
He showed the guards the stun grenade which prompted the guards to call the police.
He spent Christmas in cells before police were later ordered to release him if they do not prefer charges against him.
His lawyer Ishmael Nyaribo said he was impressed with the developments so far.
