M-Pesa’s System Maintenance Set to Interrupt Transactions

Safaricom PLC will initiate M-Pesa’s system maintenance tonight between 11:00 pm to 3:30 am tomorrow morning.

All M-Pesa services including sending and receiving money, till payments, and service payments using the mobile money service will remain unavailable between that period. However, Safaricom says that other services such as calls, data usage, and SMS will not be affected by the interruption and customers can continue enjoying them. According to the Telco’s statistics, M-Pesa remains the most formidable mobile money service in Kenya accounting for more than 30 million people.“To enable us to continue to give you the best M-PESA experience, we have scheduled system maintenance on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, from 11:00 pm to Wednesday, September 11, 3:30 am,” Safaricom announced.

Safaricom’s scheduled maintenance mostly happens at night to prevent inconveniencing a majority of their users. This, however, affects businesses that earn substantial revenues at night like entertainment joints and round-the-clock retailers.

Safaricom’s announcements are meant to prepare users to resort to alternative payment methods such as cash or card options. Purchasers of electricity tokens are also requested to refill their meters early enough.

The most pertinent complaint during these scheduled interruptions is the inability to buy electricity tokens using the Paybill option. Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) had outlawed retail sales of tokens and customers have to rely on M-Pesa largely to buy them.
