Matatu With Passengers Plying Nairobi Route Overturns

Several passengers narrowly escaped death after the matatu they were travelling in veered off the road and landed in a ditch in yet another accident on Sunday, September 15.

The accident, which took place at Kambiti along the Nairobi-Embu highway, saw the PSV lose control and roll several times, landing into what looked like a ditch.

Images obtained by Kenyans.co.ke showed the extent of the damage incurred by the blue PSV, which was turned upside down.

Luckily, no casualties were reported.

Multiple reports suggested that the 14-seater matatu was attempting to overtake another vehicle when the driver lost control.

The Kambiti area is infamous for having a black spot, which has seen several accidents in recent years.

In 2022, three people lost their lives after a 14-seater matatu rammed into a lorry as the driver attempted to overtake. The matatu was completely squashed as a result of the impact.

This was the second accident to be reported in the country on Sunday and it came hours after five people lost their lives in a bizarre accident along the Likoni-Kombani road in Kwale County.

The five individuals were all aboard a motorcycle, which rammed into the rear of a stalled lorry on the road at 1 am.

Coast Regional Police boss George Sedah confirmed the incident saying the deceased were taken to Kwale Hospital Mortuary for identification and autopsy.

An alarming statistic on Kenyan roads in 2024 reveals fatalities from road accidents have increased compared to the previous year.

in the first half of 2024 alone, 2407 Kenyans died from road accidents. while a further 10,166 others suffered injuries. 11,502 crashes were recorded in that time, according to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
