Driver Vanishes After Nairobi Matatu Ploughs Into Boda Boda Riders

A public service vehicle (PSV) bus rammed into several boda boda riders killing one rider and his passenger on the spot on Monday morning.

The tragic incident took place near the junction of Arwings Kodhek and Oledume Road in Nairobi.

According to the police who arrived swiftly at the scene, over 30 passengers on the bus sustained injuries during the accident. They were rushed to the hospital for checkups and specialised treatment.

The bus was traveling from Kawangware to Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) at a high speed when the crash occurred.

Eyewitnesses reported that the bus was speeding, which resulted in the driver failing to control the vehicle. Attempts by the driver to slow down did not bare fruit as the brakes had failed.

As a result, the bus rammed into the boda boda rider and his passenger killing them on the spot.

The bodies of the deceased were moved to the mortuary and are awaiting an autopsy.

After the accident, which happened at 8 am, the driver of the bus fled leaving the bus on the road. The police have since launched a manhunt for the suspect.

Heavy traffic formed at Oledume Road after the accident as the bus blocked the road. There was commotion as people milled around to catch a glimpse of the scene.

The traffic snarl-up later worsened at Gitanga Road following another blockade that was erected near Quickmart Supermarket to enhance an eviction exercise from a contentious plot.

The accident comes barely a day after another crash in the Denyenye area along the Likoni-Kombani road in Kwale County claimed the lives of 5 people who were on a boda boda.

Data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) between January 1 to March 20 this year indicates that 1,026 lives have been lost from road crashes.
