Moments later, the Nairobi Disaster Management team alongside area police officers arrived at the scene and helped put out the fire.

In the videos obtained by Kenyans.co.ke, the locals were captured watching from a distance as their property went up in flames even as responders intensified their efforts to rescue trapped persons.

The night inferno at Mukuru Kwa Njenga adds to a long list of fire incidents reported across the country, particularly in schools.

In a recent incident, two students were critically injured after a fire broke out at Katoloni Mixed Secondary Secondary School in Machakos County.

The fire which broke out on Saturday at around 9 pm, left 13 other students nursing minor injuries with a preliminary probe linking the inferno to arson.

A witness who spoke to the press revealed that the fire broke out when some of the students were inside their classrooms while others were in their dormitories.

The incident followed a directive by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba on mandatory inspection of all schools across the country.

In a press statement, Ogamba stated that the inspection would be done to ensure that all schools adhere to the safety protocols outlined in the Safety Standards Manual.
