How 1 Vote Saved Nyamira Governor From Impeachment

Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo on Tuesday survived an impeachment motion by one vote.

This is after a total of 34 Members of the Nyamira County Assembly convened to hold a hearing against him during which 22 lawmakers voted in favor of the governor’s impeachment.

12 others, however, voted against the impeachment motion while 0 abstained.

The governor survived after the votes cast to impeach him failed to reach the threshold of 23 votes required to hound him out of office. This effectively meant the governor survived impeachment for a second time.

During the hearing, the governor failed to appear at the County Assembly and instead sent his legal team and executive committee to represent him.

Led by County Attorney Erustus Orina, Advocates Jacob Ngwele, and Julius Anyoka, the lawyers defended the Governor against the impeachment allegations.

In the charge sheet, the MCAs cited gross violation of the Constitution and incompetence as grounds for seeking the governor’s ouster.

“Pursuant  to Article 181 of the constitution, Section 3B of the County Government Act and the standing orders number 62 of the Nyamira County Assembly standing orders, this assembly has resorted to impeach the Governor”, one of the MCAs said while moving the motion.

Outside the Assembly, Nyamira residents caused a standstill as the hearing continued as they demanded their voice to be heard.

The residents who were protesting against the governor were seen hoisting placards showing their opposition to the governor’s leadership.

This is not the first time the Governor has survived impeachment. 11 months ago, Nyamira MCAs accused him of gross violation of the law accusing him of recruiting two senior directors at the Office of the County Human Resources office.

The MCAs failed to impeach the governor after they failed to garner enough support required to ensure impeachment.
