Govt to Auction Goods Worth Millions Abandoned at Nairobi Depot

The government has announced an impending auction of unclaimed goods at one of their storage units in Nairobi if owners fail to pick them up.

In a Gazette notice dated September 20 seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the government announced items ranging from outdoor heating solutions to industrial bitumen, all belonging to different companies and individuals.

The consignees have been given 30 days to collect the items from the depot storage unit in Nairobi, or they will be auctioned to the highest bidder.

“Notice is given that unless the under-mentioned goods are entered and removed from the custody of the Customs Warehouse Keeper, Inland Container Depot in Nairobi within thirty (30)  days of this notice, they may be sold by public auction on October 21, 22 and 23 via a public auction,” the notice read.

Interested buyers in the items will be able to view them at various locations, which will be made public on October 17.

The items, which are currently held at the Syokimau Inland Container Depot, include a barbecue water heater,  patio heater, and a combine harvester.

Several packages of mobile alert systems are also set to go on auction if the owners fail to collect them by the stipulated deadline.

Other items at the government agency’s warehouse include imported Brazilian sugar, sanitary ware, aluminium frames and glasses, and various cases of liquor.

One vehicle, a Nissan Urvan, popularly used as a long-distance public service vehicle in Kenya, was also listed.

The combine harvester is perhaps the most valuable item on the list, with its price ranging from Ksh 600,000 to Ksh 8 million depending on the make and size.

Prices of the items were not indicated, although the taxman has previously said in the past that items at their auctions are sold at reasonable prices.

Among the companies whose goods are at risk of getting sold at an auction include Majid Al Futtaim Hypermarkets Limited, Plast Packaging Industries, Ridge Cabin resort Limited, Linia Pipes Limited, Lyle Kenya among others.
