Transformer Explodes Along Ronald Ngala in Nairobi CBD [PHOTOS & VIDEO]

A transformer exploded in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) along Ronald Ngala Street opposite Posta causing an inferno. The incident happened on Sunday around 6:00 pm. 

Video clips seen by Kenyans.co.ke showed a huge fire engulfing the ground floor of a three-storey commercial building adjacent to the transformer.

Traders were forced to flee for their lives as the transformer burst into flames. The commotion caused a traffic snarl-up.

Frankline Oduor, a Kenyans.co.ke reporter who was at the scene, reported that the risk of the fire spreading to adjacent buildings was imminent as efforts to contain the fire were yet to kick off.

Eyewitnesses told Oduor that the transformer blew off immediately after heavy rains began pounding thereby affecting traffic along the busy street.

It was not clear whether there were casualties by the time of publishing this story. Curious residents and businesspeople were pictured watching the fire oblivious to the dangers it posed.

Sections of Nairobi City witnessed heavy rains in the last few days with the Kenya Metrological Department predicting occasional rainfall will be received in Central Highlands, Western Kenya, Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, and the Coast region.

As of this writing, the fire emergency services had not arrived at the scene to put out the fire.

A shoe-selling retailer, among other shops, were burnt during the inferno that broke out during an evening downpour.

It is expected Kenya Power Company will conduct investigations to ascertain the safety of the electrical connections so as to avoid similar accidents in future. 

The country witnessed fire outbreaks in the past few weeks including the Hillside Endarasha tragedy where a fire claimed the lives of 21 learners.
