Govt Clarifies Funding for Junior Secondary School After Uproar

The government through the Ministry of the National Treasury on Monday clarified that it had released funds meant for Junior Secondary Schools (JSS).

The Ministry dismissed claims that circulated in the media claiming that funds were yet to be disbursed to schools causing funding challenges.

In a statement to the press dated September 30, the National Treasury noted that the funds allocated for JSS were released on Friday, last week.

“On Friday, September 27, the National Treasury disbursed Ksh7.8 billion,” read part of the statement.

According to the National Treasury, the funds disbursed were specifically allocated to the construction of JSS classrooms all over the country.

The funds were split into three, Ksh3.4 billion was sent to the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NGCDF) Board as the Ministry of Education’s share.

Similarly, Ksh3.4 billion NGCDF is matching funding and Ksh1 billion NGCDF was for Nairobi County.

The Ministry of Education, through the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NGCDF), received the lion’s share because of the construction of classes.

“This funding is intended to ensure that the necessary infrastructure is in place for the smooth operation of Junior Secondary Schools,” the Ministry of Treasury stated.

The ministry has thus vowed to continue supporting the Junior Secondary Schools with the necessary capitation.

“Any claims suggesting funding shortages or challenges are therefore unfounded,” the ministry added emphasising that education will continue to be given attention.

After grade 9, those who will join Grade 10 will be the first class in Senior Secondary School (SSS) which is expected to have three grades in its structure.
