UDA Summons 38 MCAs After Governor Eric Mutai Impeachment Motion

38 United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) from Kericho County were on Tuesday summoned for a crisis meeting in Nairobi over the motion seeking to remove Governor Eric Mutai from office.

In a letter, Acting UDA Secretary Hassan Omar urged Majority Leader Philip Rono and his fellow MCAs to present themselves to the headquarters on October 1.

The summon comes barely a week after the 37 MCAs in Kericho voted in favour of impeaching the governor over several issues including alleged gross violation of the constitution and abuse of office.

Omar in the letter informed the MCAs that the ruling party has been keeping a keen eye on the impeachment proceedings in the county and reiterated the need for the county lawmakers to follow the law to the letter in order to ensure peace prevails.

“The Party has been keenly following the developments in Kericho County and in particular the issues surrounding the impeachment of the Kericho Governor,” he notes.

“The Party continues to advocate for the good order of the County which is a UDA government in both the Executive and the Assembly. It is our considered view that the harmony and good order of the County is necessary to enable us deliver on our election pledges.”

The MCAs were then urged to accompany their majority leader to the UDA headquarters on October 1 to offer insights and contributions vital for the party’s strategic direction and response to emerging issues.

On September 25, Sigowet ward MCA Kiprotich Rogony filed a motion to impeach Governor Mutai citing a flurry of reasons including gross misconduct and abuse of office.

“The governor has variously committed constitutional wrongs that subvert the structure of government and undermine the integrity of the office and even the constitution itself,” the MCA stated while moving the motion.

Among other violations he was accused of was the alleged misappropriation of Ksh9 million set aside for to respond to and assist the victims of the Londiani Road Tragedy.

A total of 37 out of 47 MCAs voted to remove the governor.

Subsequent to this action, County Speaker Patrick Mutai set October 2 as the date when the Governor will appear before the house to defend himself.
