Kenya Met Issues Weekend Rainfall Advisory for 5 Regions

The Kenya Meteorological Department on Friday urged Kenyans living in different parts of the country to brace for occasional rainfall in both moderate and heavy amounts spanning Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

In its five-day weather forecast, the weather department cautioned that five regions notably the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley and the Coast would receive rains.

According to Kenya Met, the counties of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Nairobi would receive rains in moderate amounts. Similarly, the coastal counties of Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale were also projected to receive light rains.

Additionally, the counties of Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo and Uasin Gishu were expected to experience heavy rains. The emetreological department in its statement revealed that the heavy downpour would occur in the afternoon and would be accompanied by thunderstorms.

Residents living in Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot were also urged to brace for a similar weather pattern throughout the weekend.

Moderate rains were also forecasted in the Eastern Lowland counties of Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado and Taita Taveta. According to Kenya Met, the rains in these counties would begin in the afternoon after sunny intervals in the morning.

Meanwhile, the rest of the country was expected to experience dry weather conditions with sunny intervals throughout the day. In its report, the meteorological department noted that the counties of Turkana, Samburu, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo were expected to experience intense sunshine.

Temperature Advisory

In its weekend advisory, the weather department also warned of very cold night temperatures, particularly in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley which encompass the counties of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka and Nairobi.

According to Kenya Met, the night temperature readings in the above counties were expected to drop up to 6°C for the first two days of the forecast before retaining their levels at 8°C for the rest of the days.

Likewise, the  Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley regions which encompass Kisumu, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega and Vihiga were expected to hit 11°C.

The meteorological department also noted that high daytime temperatures were expected in some parts of the country including Turkana, (Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Isiolo and Samburu Counties. According to Kenya Met, temperatures in these regions were expected to hit 37°C.

Other counties that were also projected to experience high daytime temperatures include; Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta and coastal counties of Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale.
