Haitian PM Flies to Kenya Days After Gang Attack Killed 70

As Kenyan police officers continue to operate in Haiti as part of the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission, Haitian Prime Minister Gary Conille is set to visit Kenya this week and hold talks with President William Ruto.

The Haitian Prime Minister left the Caribbean country on Saturday evening and embarked on a trip that will see him visit Kenya seeking more bilateral support.

The visit is aimed at imploring Kenyan authorities to provide an additional deployment of their officers to help the Haitian country in the wake of recent attacks by gang members that left over 70 people dead.

“One of the aims of this trip is to go to Kenya to discuss with President Ruto how we can speed up the deployment of remnants of the Kenyan troops as quickly as possible to continue supporting the national police force,” Conille revealed.

Conille who has been a key supporter of Kenya’s security mission and has in the recent past joined support for the extension of the mission’s operating timelines with additional officers from Kenya and other countries will make a stopover in the United Arab Emirates before coming to Kenya.

The PM will be accompanied by his Minister of Foreign and Religious Affairs Dominique Dupuy who also serves as the Minister for Haitians living abroad.

Additionally, according to a video from Haitian authorities, posted by Radio Tele scoop, the Prime Minister will meet President William Ruto where they will discuss key issues among them the deployment of the next contingent of officers from Kenya.

‘’The objective of this mission is to discuss with the Kenyan President, Mr. William Ruto, on the arrival of the next contingents of police officers as part of the deployment of the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti,’’ Radio Tele scoop shared.

‘’The Prime Minister Conille Garry is preparing to leave Haiti this Saturday to travel to Africa, where he will meet with the leaders of several countries, including Kenya. With the Kenyan authorities, the Haitian leader will discuss the strengthening of the multinational mission in order to better address the security issue in Haiti,’’ the station added.

In the past week, members of the Gran Grif gang stormed through the town of Pont-Sonde in the western Artibonite region early on Thursday, killing at least 70 people including infants, and forcing over 6,000 residents to flee.

According to Reuters, the visit by Conille will be to seek security assistance in the aftermath of one of the deadliest gang attacks in the Caribbean nation in recent years.

The visit also comes at a time when the United Nations Security Council(UNSC) authorised for another year an extension for the international security force (that Kenya is part of) that is intended to help local police fight gangs and maintain law and order.
