Carbon-removal startup, Bio-Logical, intends to scale up their biochar production facility to handle 100,000 tonnes of Carbon dioxide over the next one and a half years, after receiving US$ 1.3 million from various investors in its latest round.
The startup also plans to roll out three new facilities to boost their Kenyan operations and accelerate efforts to combat climate change.Bio-Logical’s funding round was led by Redshaw advisors, CrossBoundary, Delta Energy Capital, and Steyn Group.The startup, which was founded in 2022 by Rory Buckworth and Philip Hunter, received its seed funding worth US$ 1 million in November last year to streamline operations at their Mt.Kenya Facility.“Smallholder farmers, who are some of the worst affected people on earth when it comesclimate change, are currently suffering at the hands of a climate crisis they have played no part in. At Bio-Logical, we use carbon removals to not only sequester carbon but also develop affordable soil regenerating fertlizer which boosts yields and improves climate resilience of smallholder farmers throughout Kenya,” said the startup’s co-founder, Philip Hunter.
The startup envisions that by 2030, it will ramp up its biochar production to one million tonnes, which will in turn help one million smallholder farmers to improve their crop yield. The company currently helps Microsoft in removing 10,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide based on a deal they signed on February this year.

According to Statista, Kenyan climate-tech startups have received the highest funding so far in the continent, representing 53% of the total share. More than 29 of these climate-techs raised over US$ 100,000, highlighting Kenya’s readiness to transition into green-based solutions.
