Kenya Met Warns of Cold Nights, Extremely Hot Days in Latest Weather Forecast

Kenya is set to experience varied weather patterns over the next five days, according to the latest forecast from the Kenya Meteorological Department.

From September 14 to September 18, most regions will see sunny conditions, but certain areas will face a mix of chilly nights, intense daytime heat, and sporadic rainfall.

Residents of Nairobi and its neighbouring counties, including Nyandarua, Kiambu, Nyeri, Meru, and Kirinyaga, should brace themselves for a blend of hot days and cold nights.

While sunshine will dominate the day, temperatures are expected to plummet to as low as 5°C during the night, contrasting with highs of up to 31°C in the afternoon.

The weather experts also predict a likelihood of rain on Tuesday, adding to the unpredictable nature of this period.

In contrast, the South-eastern lowlands, which cover regions like Kitui, Machakos, Makueni, and Kajiado, are expected to experience consistent sunny weather throughout the day, with partly cloudy conditions at night.

Daytime temperatures in these areas will peak at a scorching 32°C, while nights will cool down to around 10°C, providing some respite from the heat.

David Gikungu, Director of the Kenya Meteorological Department, issued a statement highlighting that most parts of the country will remain dry during the day, with only select regions forecasted for showers.

“Sunny conditions will dominate, but areas in the Highlands and Rift Valley should expect some rainfall,” he noted.

This comes as globally, 2024 is on record to become the hottest year yet.

The forecast suggests that the Lake Victoria Basin and parts of the Rift Valley will see sporadic rainfall, which could intensify on Sunday and extend into next week.

Western Kenya, including counties like Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, and Migori, is likely to experience a wet weekend, with showers and thunderstorms expected every afternoon and night from Saturday through Wednesday.

Rain is predicted to fall consistently in the afternoons, while mornings are set to remain sunny, providing a sharp contrast between different times of the day.

Temperatures in this region will vary, with lows of 7°C and highs of 32°C.

As the coast prepares for a wet start to the new week, residents of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale should expect a gloomy few days.

While Saturday and Sunday will start off sunny, by Monday, the weather is expected to take a turn, with heavy showers predicted on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Temperatures along the coast will range from a cooler 21°C to 32°C, with residents urged to prepare for wet conditions, particularly towards the latter part of the forecasted period.

Kenya’s diverse geography plays a significant role in these variations, as the Rift Valley and the Lake Victoria Basin typically experience more rainfall, while the lowlands and coastal regions contend with heat and sporadic showers.

Already, Kenya Met has stated that September will be colder than usual.
