School Closed Indefinitely After Violent Protests

St Monica Girls High School in Kitale, Trans-Nzoia county has been closed down indefinitely after students went on a rampage on Sunday, September 22.

The students were reportedly up in arms in protest against their principal, who they wanted to be removed from office.

Reports reaching Kenyans.co.ke claimed that the girls have been critical of their school principal over alleged mismanagement.

Images and videos of the aftermath of their rampage revealed property, including a school gate, was left damaged.

Irate students also left messages on whiteboards, expressing their dissatisfaction with their school principal Grace Onyango Ataro.

In one video, students can be seen hurriedly leaving the school in the wake of their rampage.

St Monica became the latest one to experience indefinite closure, after a spate of unrest in Kenyan learning institutions in September.

On September 16, Dagoretti High School was closed down indefinitely after following unrest that left 11 students injured.

Chaos reportedly ensued after a basketball match which descended into a physical confrontation between two warring factions.

Institutions of higher learning have also not been spared in the worrying wave of unrest. On Tuesday, September 17, Kabete Polytechnic’s Chief Principal Patrick Muchemi released a letter ordering all students to vacate the premises.

This followed chaos that rocked the institutions earlier that day, as students protested the introduction of exam fees on top of normal tuition.
